Hi JSprague and others. You may remember me from a couple of months ago seeking cert. advice as a career changer. Well, I am now A+ certified and in the midst of 2153(MS Netwking) on a MCSA track. I'm having a very difficult time with this class and am considering resitting all 3 MS classes so far b4 taking 2126. I also do not feel that competent with my A+ material even though I passed the exams as I haven't had that much hands-on experience.
However, I have been offered a position as a POS(point of sale), basically doing installs in restaurants/bars, teaching users how to use the systems, and troubleshooting them. This is not really what I'd like to do in the long-run, but i'm thinking it might be good since I'd be gaining hands-on experience with a technology that will only become more prevalent in our society. The pay isn't great(a little over $11/hr) but does come with benefits, co. car, and some training. And their business is booming.
I'm thinking i should accept, with the economy the way it is right now, and gain some experience. One reason I guess i'm holding back is that i'm thinking "what if i find something better in 6 mos?" They're emphasizing they want somebody to make a career out of it, simply b/c of the time and resources they're going to put into training me. It probably would kill my chance of getting a good reference, but I think the experience would be the most important thing. I'd get to do some networking, mapping drives, swapping out nics, s, troubleshooting, etc.
Please give me your opinion. Is POS a valuable technology to know? Does the experience factor take precedence over the money and the uncertainty? Is any job in IT a good job right now with the economy slumping?
THANKS alot, |
