A+ Error - Resolving Buffer Underrun
Question 157: (QID=2099)
Amy is trying to burn a CD-ROM, but keeps getting buffer underrun errors. Which of the following suggestions may help?
1. Have her try burning at a slower speed
2. Check and make sure that her CD-ROM does not have any scratches or dirt on it
3. Her CD burner is broken and must be replaced
4. Have her shutdown open applications
CorrectWrong!
Correct answer(s): 1 3 4
Explanation: There are a wide variety of causes of buffer underrun errors. Making sure that the computer has as many of its resources available and burning at a slower speed can help prevent this error. This error can also occur if the CD burner is no longer functioning correctly.
The study guide has the following solutions for buffer underrun:
* Make sure that your burner has a large enough buffer. (not an answer)
* Make sure that you close as many applications and processes on your computer before burning. Also make sure that screen savers, anti-virus software, etc. do not start running while you are burning. (answer 4)
* Try burning at a slower speed. (answer 1)
* Make sure that your media is not scratched or dirty. (answer 2)
Cleaning the media is a suggestion in the study guide, but is marked as an incorrect answer on the test.
In my opinion, the answers should be 1 2 and 4. Personally I would never consider replacing a CD-RW just because of buffer underrun errors unless I was completely out of ideas otherwise; furthermore the study guide does not suggest doing so (although the answer explanation does). It's a pretty glaring inconsistency. |
