Preferred/Alternate DNS question
Imagine you configure a client machine (let's use XP for example) with a preferred dns server of 192.168.0.1 and an alternate dns server of 192.168.0.2. Recursion is disabled on the preferred dns server. However, recursion is enabled for the alternate dns server.
If you submit a dns query for something out on the internet then it will go to the preferred dns server. Won't the server respond back with a negative answer and that is the end of it? I ran into a question using TestOut where the answer was that the alternate dns server would resolve the query. I thought the alternate dns server was only contacted if the preferred dns server could not be reached. I thought if a preferred dns server comes back with a positive or negative answer then that is it and the alternate dns server is not contacted.
Am I incorrect?
