Finding people.. wow

Hi,

I have been in a position to sit in a few interviews as of late. All I can say is WOW. There is no shortage of people wanting to work in Australia. People appropriate is another matter. So some advise for those seeking.

1. If you do not speak English, don't bother. Sorry, it's not about being racist, it's about the fact that hiring a translator to follow you around all day will cost twice as much as employing a native English speaker. We have English speaking customers and you must be able to communicate with them. I do not care if your wife can translate your resume for me.

2. If our first contact is from your mother, either hysterically begging us to give you a job, or telling us that you're really great because you once fixed her friend's PC, but I can't talk to you direct because you don't come across well on the phone, you will likely not get considered.

3. I look very suspiciously on people who claim to have spent the last few years as a specialised Exchange consultant, who then claims all your experience is with NT4 and Exchange 5.5.

4. If you walk in wearing a track suit and then tell your potential employer "I don't do suits/ties" you will not get a job.

5. Don't write a resume with typos. And definitely don't use SMS speak. If you say "did analing for ppl" you will get laughed at.

I can't beleive that we had to go through so many people to find anyone who made it past the above checks.

It's less about interview and resume skills, more about the basics at the moment imo.
