Oracle introduce CNN Custom News

When Time Warner Vice Chairman Ted Turner took the Comdex stage in Atlanta with Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison to hawk CNN Custom News, Turner opened with pertinent statistics from a Reuters survey on the consequences of having too much information. The study cites stress, difficulty making decisions and, according to two-thirds of respondents, a compromised personal life, as the downside of the data glut.
"It's affecting our love life, for chrissake!" said Turner, the never-enigmatic media mogul, who lofted CNN Custom News as the answer to information overload. The hybrid news service, born of the CNN and Oracle partnership, offers Web search capabilities, a video feed and Java ticker. CNN Custom News will filter news from CNN's 31 worldwide bureaus, as well as from more than 100 supplemental news services and weather for 3,000 cities, through Oracle's ConText software residing on an Oracle Web Application Server.
Users can choose from nine categories and 300 subcategories to customize their personal CNN Web start page. These personal profiles will be used to deliver targeted advertising, which will provide revenue for the site.
Citicorp's Citibank has signed on as advertiser for an 18-month trial period.
Unlike the Dow Jones News Service, Oracle Web Application Server queries the news database, keeping the query application off the user's computer. Oracle says this approach increases response time and offers greater scalability. CNN hopes to expand its online languages--English and Swedish (Svenska CNN)--via upcoming Web sites such as CNN Espaol.
Yet collecting available news sources in one place does not guarantee usefulness. During the CNN Custom News launch, Ellison feigned an onstage Wintel machine crash. His switch to an adjacent NC was upstaged when he lost his reading glasses and was unable to pull up current stock quotes or successfully save Turner's user profile. "You're not doing a very good job," said Turner. "We should have practiced." A spokesman said Netscape was to blame, but news junkies may find that CNN Custom News will not soon obsolete all the news that's fit to print.
